- Write an article for publication in an Internet magazine on one argument topic.
- The article should be discursive - it should discuss the claim, support, warrants and backing.
- Include all six parts of Toulmin's argument analysis, putting the main claim at the start of the article.
- Use four pieces of support (or more if liked), but also give rebuttal for each item of that support; this will make the article balanced, rather than one-sided.
- Since warrants link support with main claim, separate warrants may be needed for each item of support. Alternatively, a "universal" warrant could apply to all four pieces of support.
- Ensure the writing flows, is logically ordered (order support from weakest to strongest or vice versa) and makes sense.
- If preferred, structure the argument so that it does not agree with the claim as given in class.
- Do include your own opinion on the claim.
- Do not use the personal pronouns I or we in the argument - the register will be very formal.
- Use your own ideas and support - citations of other people's ideas, work or opinions are not necessary.
- A properly discursive argument should be between one and two pages, although slightly less or slightly more could be acceptable.
- Plagiarising is not acceptable.
- Include an eye-catching title, your name and index number as a header (all in italics and centred).
