Akademsko_help for assignment 3

  • Write an article for publication in an Internet magazine on one argument topic.
  • The article should be discursive - it should discuss the claim, support, warrants and backing.
  • Include all six parts of Toulmin's argument analysis, putting the main claim at the start of the article.
  • Use four pieces of support (or more if liked), but also give rebuttal for each item of that support; this will make the article balanced, rather than one-sided.
  • Since warrants link support with main claim, separate warrants may be needed for each item of support. Alternatively, a "universal" warrant could apply to all four pieces of support.
  • Ensure the writing flows, is logically ordered (order support from weakest to strongest or vice versa) and makes sense.
  • If preferred, structure the argument so that it does not agree with the claim as given in class.
  • Do include your own opinion on the claim.
  • Do not use the personal pronouns I or we in the argument - the register will be very formal.
  • Use your own ideas and support - citations of other people's ideas, work or opinions are not necessary.
  • A properly discursive argument should be between one and two pages, although slightly less or slightly more could be acceptable.
  • Plagiarising is not acceptable.
  • Include an eye-catching title, your name and index number as a header (all in italics and centred).
